With him, Stranger Things has gone full horror and has more in common with A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Exorcist (both of which are explicitly referenced) than it does with The Goonies or Ghostbusters. The death of the mind flayer has given the show a chance to reinvent beyond its own lore and treat this season as a fresh start – prepare to say hello to an even more terrifying entity from the Upside Down: Vecna.Ī sort of skinless humanoid demon, Vecna is a psychological terror straight from D&D who enters the minds of various Hawkins residents, tortures them with their own bad memories and kills them with a bone-snapping, eye-popping flourish of his bony fingers. The characters, old and new, are so well-written and lived-in that Stranger Things would be just as enjoyable if it stayed that way (though the name would be somewhat confusing). Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), meanwhile, has made himself a new friend, Argyle (Eduardo Franco), and the pair are perennially stoned.įor a while, the show plays out like an 80s teen drama full of nerds, jocks, roller skate rinks, juvenile relationship woes and perms. ![]() ![]() ![]() Over in their new home of California, Will (Noah Schnapp) and a now-powerless Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) – now going by Jane – are finding the high school experience a little more tough, and the girl we have seen save the world on multiple occasions is now the victim of vicious bullying.
